The Iona Gaels will travel to the Donald L. Tucker Center to take on the Florida State Seminoles this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.
The Iona Gaels will open their season with some major question marks as although Iona made the NCAA Tournament last season, they lost a bunch of talent from their roster over the off season. Iona finished last year with a 22-11 record but will enter this season without two of their best players in A.J English (22.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Isaiah Williams (12.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg). Iona does have two starters returning in Jordan Washington (14.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Deyshonee Much (13.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg). Iona will get back Schadrac Casimir (6.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg) who missed the majority of last season with a hip injury. Iona will hope that newcomer Jon Severe, who earned A-10 rookie of the year honors with Fordham during the 2013-14 season, can make an immediate impact for the Gaels. Iona was one of the better shooting teams in the country last season but we should probably expect the Gaels to continue their up-tempo style of play this season.

The Florida State Seminoles opened their season last Saturday with an impressive 88-67 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Florida State was outstanding on the offensive end shooting 49.3% from the field and used a 14-2 run to open the second to create some separation and secure the victory. Leading the way for Florida State was Dwayne Bacon who had 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Florida State took a big hit when Malik Beasley (15.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg) decided to leave for the NBA however, the Florida State Seminoles still return a solid backcourt with Dwayne Bacon (15.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Xavier Rathan-Mayes (11.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.4 apg). Florida State brought in a solid recruitment class led by Freshman Jonathan Isaac and junior college transfer Braian Angola-Rodas. Florida State will probably end up in the middle of the pack in the very tough ACC conference, however, the Seminoles are a very talented team that should be able to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The Gaels are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. ACC opponents however, just 7-19 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games. The Seminoles are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 Tuesday games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Iona had one of the most exciting players in the country last season in A.J. English and although Jordan Washington should be able to become one of the better players in the MAAC, it’s hard to imagine that the Gaels will be able to replace the offensive production lost by A.J. English and Isaiah Williams. Florida State is a well-rounded team with a great backcourt and decent size in the frontcourt and if they can continue to shoot like what we saw in their season opener, the Seminoles have the talent to turn some heads in the ACC. Iona will be one of the better teams in the MAAC however, they just don’t have the talent to compete with the likes of Florida State, and I think the Seminoles come out strong at home and cover this large spread. Take Florida State to cover.
