The Manhattan Jaspers and the Winthrop Eagles face off on Tuesday morning as part of ESPN’s 24 Hours of Basketball.
The Manhattan Jaspers are off to a 0-1 start to the season as they lost their opener to Bucknell 64-76. Manhattan shot just 35.5 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from beyond the 3-point arc but they weren’t able to close the gap after trailing by 4 points at the half. Thomas Capuano led the Jaspers with 11 points and 5 assists in 30 minutes of playing time. Zavier Turner had 10 points, Ahmed Ismail had 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Aaron Walker had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Manhattan simply didn’t shoot well enough or defend well enough to get the win and they will need to play better if they hope to have any success.

The Winthrop Eagles got their season started with a win as they slammed Ferrum 66-47 in their opener. Winthrop overcame shooting 9.5 percent from beyond the 3-point arc by shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free throw line. Xavier Cooks was a one-man show for the Eagles scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the win. Joshua Davenport had 8 points and 6 rebounds for Winthrop, Duby Okeke had 8 points and 7 rebounds, and Roderick Perkins also added 8 points. Winthrop was fortunate to be up against soft competition because they likely wouldn’t have had the same result against much better.
Manhattan is 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games, 2-5 against the spread in their last 7 non-conference games, and 6-1 against the spread following a loss. Winthrop is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 games, 5-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 road games.
I don’t think the odds makers are even close on this one as Manhattan is the far better team and at home. Ferrum hardly classifies as a quality opponent and shooting less that 10 percent from beyond the 3-point arc should put Winthrop in a deep hole here.
