The Appalachian State Mountaineers and Tennessee Volunteers look for their respective opening wins of the season as they face off at Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday night.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers kicked off their 2016-17 season by falling to the Davidson Wildcats by a final score of 86-74. Appalachian State actually took a lead into the half, but Davidson ended up being just too much to handle in the end. Ronshad Shabazz and Jake Babic tied for the team high with 11 points on the night, with Shabazz making just 4 of his 13 field goal attempts on the night, including a pair from behind the arc while Babic converted on just 2 of 7 but made all 6 of his attempts from the foul line on the night. Griffin Kinney and Tyrell Johnson both followed closely behind with 10 points, rounding out the list of Mountaineers who finished in double digit scoring in the game. Kinney however, was the only one to flirt with a double-double as he also posted 8 boards while no other Appalachian State player had more than 5 rebounds. As a team, the Mountaineers are shooting 39% from the field, including just under 32% from 3-point range and 70% from the foul line.

The Tennessee Volunteers opened their season by finding themselves on the wrong end of a 82-69 scoreline, being upset by in-state opponent, the Chattanooga Mocs. Tennessee could barely get a foothold on the game as Chattanooga held the lead most of the game. Jordan Bone led the Vols with 21 points on 8 for 14 from the field, including 4 for 4 at the foul line and 1 for 4 from behind the arc, which was Tennessee’s only make from 3-point range in the entire game. Bone was one of 3 Volunteers with 10+ points as Robert Hubbs III logged 11 points on 4 of 13 from the floor and Lamonte Turner who only made 2 of his 10 field goal attempts but potted 8 free throws to finish with 10 points. Grant Williams found himself a bucket shy of a double-double as he pulled down 10 rebounds while making 2 of 5 field goals for 8 points in the loss. As a team, Tennessee is shooting just under 33% from the field, an abysmal 6.2% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line.
Appalachian State is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. the SEC while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Tuesday Games. Tennessee is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 home games.
Both of these teams took it hard in their respective openers, however Appalachian State lost to a very good Davidson team and while Chattanooga is a good team as well, Tennessee was rightfully favored and couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat from 3-point range. If they can’t find a way to knock down the outside shot early, I think this could get very dicey for the Vols.
