The UC Irvine Anteaters will travel to Hass Pavilion to take on the 25th ranked California Golden Bears this Wednesday night.
The UC Irvine Anteaters improved to 1-1 on the season after defeating the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 73-58, this past Monday. UC Irvine raced out to a 37-23 halftime lead and used a 17-5 run in the 2nd half to pull away and secure the win. UC Irvine was outstanding on the defensive end as they held the Jackrabbits to 28.8% shooting from the field and 16.7% (5-30) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Anteaters was Jaron Martin who had 24 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. On the season, UC Irvine has been led by Jaron Martin (13.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.5), Ioannis Dimakopoulos (9.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Eyassu Worku (9.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg). UC Irvine lost 4 starters from last year’s team and has been missing their lone returning starter in Luke Nelson (13.7 ppg, 3.9 apg) who had missed the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury.

The 25th ranked California Golden Bears started off their season with an impressive 82-53 victory over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits this past Friday. Even without one of their best players in Ivan Rabb, California used a 30-3 run in the 2nd half to easily secure the win. California outrebounded South Dakota State by a 54-26 margin and held the Anteaters to just 28.6% shooting from the field. Leading the way for the Golden Bears was Roger Moute A Bidias who had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and a block. California lost three of their best players in Jaylen Brown (14.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg), Tyrone Wallace (15.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Jordan Matthews (13.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg) however, still should be one of the better teams in the PAC-12 as they return Ivan Rabb (12.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg) and Jabari Bird (10.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg). California should be once again hard to score against with big-men Kingsley Okoroh and Kameron Rooks defeating the rim in the frontcourt.
The Anteaters are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. PAC-12 opponents. The Golden Bears are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 home games and 13-2-1 ATS in their last 16 games following a straight up win.
California looked outstanding in their opening matchup against SDSU and although they lost a lot of talent from last year’s team, still have Ivan Rabb and Jabari Bird leading the way. UC Irvine should be one of the better teams in teams in the Big West, however, with losing 4-starters from last year’s 28-10 team and not having Luke Nelson available due to injury, I just don’t see UC Irvine being able to hang around with the Golden Bears in the this one. Take California to cover this large spread.
