The New Mexico State Aggies improved to 2-1 on the season after defeating the Samford Bulldogs, 58-48, this past Wednesday. New Mexico State got great production from their bench and didn’t trail in the 2nd half after taking a 28-24 halftime lead. The Aggies were outstanding defensively in the victory as they held the Bulldogs to just 33.3% shooting from the field and 21.4% (3-14) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for New Mexico State was Eli Chuha who had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds from off the bench. Offensively, New Mexico State is averaging 73.0 ppg on 42.0% shooting from the field. The Aggies are averaging just 6.0 three-pointers per game and are shooting 26.1% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for New Mexico State has been Eli Chuha (13.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg), Ian Baker (12.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 apg), Sidy Ndir (11.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.3 apg), and Matt Taylor (7.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.0 apg). Defensively, New Mexico State is holding their opponents to an average of 54.7 ppg on 31.7% shooting from the field. The Aggies have done a nice job protecting the glass as they are averaging 6.0 blocks per game.

The New Mexico Lobos improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Houston Baptist Huskies, 95-79, this past Monday night. New Mexico used a 12-4 run early in the 1st half and had no trouble picking up the win after taking a 50-31 halftime lead. New Mexico shot 62.2% from field and outrebounded the Huskies by a 33-25 margin. Leading the way for the Lobos was Tim Williams who had a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Offensively, New Mexico is averaging 88.0 ppg on 53.8% shooting from the field. The Lobos do most of their damage inside as they are currently averaging just 3.5 three-pointers per game on 25.0% shooting. On the season, New Mexico has been led by Tim Williams (24.5 ppg, 11.0 rpg), Sam Logwood (14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.0 apg), Elijah Brown (10.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.5 apg, 1.5 spg), and Xavier Adams (8.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg). Defensively, New Mexico is allowing their opponents to average 74.5 ppg on 45.0% shooting and currently have a rebound margin of +9.
The Aggies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Mountain West opponents and Aggies are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Friday games. The Lobos are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
New Mexico State finished the season with a 23-11 record however, lost one of the best players in College Basketball last season in Pascal Siakam (20.3 ppg, 11.6 rpg) and will need to rely on Ian Baker to help make up some of the production lost by Siakam’s departure. New Mexico finished last season with a 17-15 record however, could be one of the better teams in the Mountain West this season as they returned four starters including Elijah Brown who is one of the best players in the conference. I generally like to take the points in a rivalry game however, Ian Baker is shooting just 26.8% from the field early on this season and as I think Tim Williams and Elijah Brown will be matchup nightmares for the Aggies, I’m taking the Lobos to cover at home.
