The Florida International Golden Panthers look for a college basketball victory versus the South Alabama Jaguars.
The Florida International Golden Panthers had hoped for a 2-0 start to the season but their defense didn’t cooperate in Monday’s 82-67 defeat to Stetson that dropped them to 1-1. The Golden Panthers trailed by eleven at the break and were never able to get the necessary stops over the final 20 minutes to mount a comeback. The Hatters held a 55%-52% shooting edge but Stetson held a 15-5 advantage on threes and that was decisive. FIU was paced by a 20 point, five yank effort from Eric Nottage on 7-10 shooting with Michael Kessens tossing in eleven points and hauling in 13 rebounds. Donte McGill and Eric Lockett each netted12 points but this game was about getting more stops.
The South Alabama Jaguars opened the year with a win at UNLV before destroying subdivision Blue Mountain College by an 88-35 count. A 34-11 first half says this game probably shouldn’t have been played with the Toppers sinking shots at only 20%. The Jaguars had no such issues with their shots dropping at over 49% which turned out to be a whopping 23 more makes from the field to go along with 24 more rebounds and 17 more looks at the basket. Ken Williams led the USA attack with 14 points on 5-10 shooting with Nick Stover tossing in 12 points. Shaq Calhoun and Trhae Mitchell combined for 21 points and 13 rebounds as South Alabama was much too big and fast for the Toppers.
