We’ve got an interesting early-season college basketball matchup on the slate for Saturday, as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers meet up with the BYU Cougars at Marriott Center in Provo.
Coastal Carolina comes into this game with a 1-2 record on the year. The Chanticleers lost 70-53 in their opener against Alabama, followed that up with a 71-64 loss to Charleston and got their first win of the year on Wednesday with an 89-59 result over Coppin State.

Elijah Wilson and Jaylen Shaw are each averaging in double digits for Coastal Carolina, with Wilson sitting on 15.3 PPG and 4.0 RPG and Shaw posting 10.7 PPG and 4.3 APG. Demario Beck is also putting up some solid stats on 9.0 PPG and 6.0 RPG through three games so far.
Over on the BYU side, they’ve got a 2-0 record on the young season. The Cougars won 82-73 over Princeton in their opener and took care of Coppin State 96-59 on Thursday. In that Eagles game, BYU’s Eric Mika was hot again on 6-of-8 shooting for 18 points and three blocks.
Mika is averaging 22.0 PPG with 11.5 RPG and 2.5 BPG to lead the cougars, while TJ Haws is also playing pretty well on 15.5 PPG and 3.5 RPG. Nick Emery is averaging in double figures for BYU through two games with his 14.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG and 3.5 APG.
Coastal Carolina is 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games following a straight-up win, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games versus a team with a winning straight-up record. Coastal Carolina is also 0-4 ATS in their last four non-conference games, and 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
Meanwhile, BYU is 4-0 ATS in their last four against the Sun Belt, and 6-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games. BYU is also 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall, and 18-8-1 ATS in their last 27 home games.
Both these teams have played—and destroyed—Coppin State in this early season already, but there’s not much we can gather from that given the fact that Coppin State simply isn’t any good. Aside from that matchup, Coastal Carolina hasn’t been all that impressive, with Wilson being the only consistent source of points. BYU isn’t necessarily a whole lot deeper, but given the limp matchup they should have more than enough in the tank to cover here.
