The Rider Broncs will travel to the USF Dun Dome to take on the South Florida Bulls this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The Rider Broncs improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Hartford Hawks, 84-68, this past Wednesday. Rider used a 9-0 run late in the 1st half to take a 41-35 halftime lead and led throughout the 2nd half in the victory. Rider shot 45.2% from the field and outrebounded Hartford by a 49-33 margin. Leading the way for Rider was Kahlil Thomas who had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Offensively, Rider is averaging 75.5 ppg on 45.75 shooting from the field. The Broncs have struggled from beyond the arc as they are averaging just 4.0 three-pointers per game on 26.7% shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, Rides has been led by Xavier Lundy (15.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.5 spg), Kahlil Thomas (15.5 ppg, 11.0 rpg), Norville Carey (12.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg), and Stevie Jordan (11.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.0 apg). The South Florida Bulls dropped to 1-1 on the season after being defeated by the Elon Phoenix, 74-61, this past Thursday. Elon was outstanding in the 1st half and held a double-digit lead throughout the 2nd half after taking a 39-36 halftime lead. South Florida shot 42.6% from the field and 33.3% (4-12) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Bulls was Geno Thorpe who had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Offensively, South Florida is averaging 72.5 ppg on 48.2% shooting from the field. South Florida is shooting just 65.2% from the FT-Line and has struggled with getting assists as the Bulls have posted just a 0.69 assist/turnover ratio. On the season, South Florida has been led by Geno Thorpe (17.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.0 apg), Michael Bibby (12.5 ppg), Bo Zeigler (11.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.0 apg, 3.5 spg), and Tulio Da Silva (10.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg). Defensively, South Florida is allowing their opponents to average 73.5 ppg on 39.2% shooting.
The Broncs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games however, just 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games. The Bulls are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.
Rider struggled last season posting a 13-20 overall record, however, with three starters returning including Kahlil Thomas, the Broncs should be able to put up more of a fight in the MAAC conference this season. South Florida has a rough 2015-16 season, finishing with an 8-25 record, and although they have one of the better sophomores in the conference in Jahmal McMurray, McMurray is not available for the 1st six games of the season due to an undisclosed violation. South Florida will have the home court advantage in this one, but as I think that is the only advantage that they will have, I’m taking Rider to cover this small road spread.
