The South Dakota State Jackrabbits will travel to Arena-Auditorium to take on the Wyoming Cowboys this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbited picked up their 1st win of the season and improved to 1-2 on the year after defeating the D-II Wayne State (NE) Wildcats, 80-72, this past Wednesday. South Dakota used a strong offensive 2nd half to overcome a 37-33 halftime deficit to secure the victory. South Dakota State struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 24.0% (6-25), however, was outstanding at the FT-Line shooting 84.8% (28-33). Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was Mike Daum who had a double-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Offensively, South Dakota State is averaging 63.7 ppg on 33.1% shooting from the field and 22.4% shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, South Dakota State has been led by Mike Daum (15.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg,), Reed Tellinghuisen (10.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.3 apg), Skyler Flatten (9.0 ppg, 1.7 rpg), and Tevin King (8.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.3 spg). Defensively, South Dakota State is allowing their opponents to average 75.7 ppg on 46.5% shooting from the field. The Wyoming Cowboys improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Montana Grizzlies, 73-72, this past Monday. Wyoming was able to take a 41-35 halftime lead and hung on late after Justin James hit a couple of FT’s late in the game. Wyoming shot 39.6% from the field and shot 81.5% (22-27) from the FT-Line. Leading the way for the Cowboys was Hayden Dalton who had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes from off the bench. Offensively, Wyoming is averaging 80.5 ppg on 46.0% shooting from the field and 38.3% shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, Wyoming has been led by Jason McManamen (14.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.5 spg), Alexander Aka Gorski (14.0 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 3.5 apg), Justin James (12.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg), and Jordan Naughton (11.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg). Defensively, Wyoming is holding their opponents to an average of 60.5 ppg on 39.3% shooting from the field. The Cowboys have done a nice job protecting the paint early on the season and are averaging 6.5 bpg.
The Jackrabbits are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning 5 above .600 however, just 1-6 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games however, are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
South Dakota State was projected to be one of the better teams in the Summit League this season behind their star player in Mike Daum, however, the loss of their longtime coach, Scott Nagy, and losing their entire starting backcourt in Deondre Parks (14.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and George Marshall (14.9 ppg) have seemed to have had a bigger effect on the Jackrabbits than expected. Wyoming finished last season with just a 14-18 record however, and although they lost their best player in Josh Adams (24.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 4.3 apg), the Cowboys returned the majority of their team from last season. The Jackrabbits Mike Daum is the best player on the court in this one, however, the Jackrabbits have looked awful on both sides of the ball to open up the season and as Wyoming is one of the tougher places to play in College Basketball, I’m taking the Cowboys to cover this small home spread.
