The Norfolk State Spartans will travel to Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on the Butler Bulldogs this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Norfolk State Spartans dropped to 2-2 on the season after being defeated by the Vanderbilt Commodores, 75-52, this past Friday. Norfolk State went down by a 37-28 margin at halftime and after an early 9-2 run in the 2nd half by the Commodores, the Spartans couldn’t get within double digits the rest of the way. Norfolk State struggled offensively, as the Spartans shot just 30.0% from the field and 18.2% (2-11) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Spartans was Jonathan Wade who had 20 points, 8 rebounds, and a steal. On the season, Norfolk State is averaging 73.8 ppg on 45.4% shooting from the field and 37.7% shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, the Spartans have been led by Jonathan Wade (21.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.8 apg), Zaynah Robinson (12.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.8 apg), Carrington Ward (9.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.0 apg), and Alex Long (6.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg). Defensively, Norfolk State is allowing their opponents to average 66.5 ppg on 36.7% shooting from the field. The Butler Bulldogs improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating the Bucknell Bison, 86-60, this past Saturday. Butler raced out a quick 18-6 lead to start of the lead and had little trouble after the Bulldogs extended the lead to 20 points early in the 2nd half. Butler was outstanding on the offensive end as they shot an impressive 62.1% from the field and 53.3% (8-15) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Butler was Kelan Martin who had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. On the season, Butler is averaging 81.7 ppg on 51.1% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 8.0 three-pointers per game on 35.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Butler has been led by Kelan Martin (18.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.0 apg), Kamar Baldwin (10.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.0 spg), Avery Woodson (9.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Andrew Chrabascz (8.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.3 apg). Defensively, Butler is holding their opponents to an average of 60.0 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. Butler comes into this game with a turnover margin of 8.7 which ranks 10th in the country early in the season.
The Spartans are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 road games however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Monday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
Norfolk State has one of the toughest offseason in the MEAC this past season as the Spartans, which finished last year with a 17-17 overall record, lost their top three scorers in Jeff Short (15.4 ppg), D’Shon Taylor (13.3 ppg), and Charles Oliver (11.9 ppg). Butler has one of the better players in the Big East in Kelan Martin and the Bulldogs look like they will use a similar blueprint of solid defense and efficient shooting to try to make it back to the NCAA Tournament this season. This is a lot of points for Butler to cover, however, Norfolk State isn’t the team they were just a few years ago, and I think Butler will dominate at Hinkle Fieldhouse like they did against Northern Colorado (89-52 Win) and Bucknell. Take Butler to cover.
