The Georgia Southern Eagles go hunting for their first road win of the season as they head to Akron to take on the Zips on Tuesday night.
The Georgia Southern Eagles fell to 1-2 on the year after an 80-67 defeat at the hands of Mercer. The sad thing for Georgia Southern is that they actually held a 5-point halftime lead over the Bears before being outscored 46-28 in the 2nd half to take the loss. Ike Smith led the Eagles with 19 point on 6 of 17 from the floor, including just 1 make on 7 attempts from downtown, but made up for is by converting all 6 of his free throw attempts on the night. Smith was part of a trio of Eagles who logged double figures in the scoring column as B.J. Gladden and Tookie Brown put up 16 and 15 points respectively. Gladden’s 16 points came on 5 of 8 from the floor to go along with 5 of 7 from the free throw line in addition to his team-high 7 rebounds while Brown’s 15 points came by way of 5 of 11 from the floor with all 5 made from behind the 3-point line. As a team, Georgia Southern is putting up 79.3 points per game on 42.8% shooting from the field, 30.8% from 3-point range while making just 63.2% of their free throws, a number that has to improve if they want to climb higher than their current 283rd ranking out of 347 teams in that category.

The Akron Zips won back-to-back games to climb to 2-1 following an 88-41 dismantling of the Radford Highlanders. Akron has a 29-14 halftime lead before blowing it wide open in the second half, outscoring Radford 59-27 in the final 20 minutes. Isaiah Johnson was one of 4 Zips with at least 10 points on the night, as he racked up 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting, with 3 of 5 makes from the foul line for 15 points to go along with his team-high 7 boards on the night. Next down the list was Daniel Utomi who made good use of his 11 minutes on the night, connecting on 4 of 5 attempts including a 3-pointer and 5 for 7 from the foul line for 14 points. Antino Jackson and Tavian Dunn-Martin rounded out the group as Jackson made 4 of his 7 shots on the night, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc for 12 points while Dunn-Martin’s 3 field goals all went through from behind the arc to go along with a pair of free throws to finish with 11 points on the night. Noah Robotham fell just short of being #5 in the group, falling 1 point shy after making 3 of 5 field goals, all fro downtown to finish with 9 points on the night. Akron saw 15 players get floor time in the blowout, with no Zip logging more than 23 minutes of game time in the win. As a team, Akron is shooting 45.7% from the field while averaging 80.7 points per game. The Zips are also making 35.9% from behind the arc and 72.7% from the charity stripe this season.
Georgia Southern is 14-4 ATS in their last 18 games overall and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games while the over is 7-0 in their last 7 non-conference games. Akron is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. the Sun Belt and 52-25 ATS in their last 77 home games while the over is 11-5-1 in their last 17 games overall
Georgia Southern has struggled when going up against real competition this year, while Akron has shown no signs of slowing down early in the year. The line looks about right, but I’ll still stick with Akron to win by double digits.
