The Indiana State Sycamores and Stanford Cardinal will square off at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex this Friday afternoon in the Advocare Invitational.
The Indiana State Sycamores dropped to 2-2 on the season after being defeated by the 21st ranked Iowa State Cyclones, 73-71, yesterday afternoon. In a back and forth game, Indiana State couldn’t pull off the upset victory after Brenton Scott missed a game-winning three-pointers as time expired. Indiana State was outstanding on the defensive end as they held the high-scoring Iowa State offense to just 34.2% shooting from the field and 32.0% (8-25) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Sycamores was Brenton Scott who had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block. On the season, Indiana State is averaging 81.3 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Sycamores average 10.0 three-pointers per game on 39.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Indiana State has been led by Brenton Scott (21.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg), Matt Van Scyoc (11.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg), Jordan Barnes (9.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Everett Clemons (6.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 5.8 apg). Defensively, Indiana State is allowing their opponents to average 70.5 ppg on 37.4% shooting.

The Stanford Cardinal dropped to 4-1 on the season after they were defeated by the Miami Hurricanes, 67-53, yesterday afternoon. Stanford struggled offensively throughout the entire game and allowed the Hurricanes pull away for the victory after Miami ended the game on a 22-8 run. Stanford allowed Miami to shoot 46.0% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 18-11 margin. Leading the way for the Cardinal was Reid Travis who had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. On the season, Stanford is averaging 70.4 ppg on 44.5% shooting from the field. The Cardinal are averaging 4.4 three-pointers per game on 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Stanford has been led by Reid Travis (17.4 ppg, 10.4 rpg), Dorian Pickens (13.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.2 apg), Michael Humphrey (8.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg), and Robert Cartwright (5.2 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.8 spg). Defensively, Stanford is holding their opponents to an average of 60.8 ppg on 36.6% shooting.
The Sycamores are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS win. The Cardinal are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 Friday games however, just 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS loss.
Indiana State showed that they are a team that will be able to compete in the MVC this season as the Sycamores have an outstanding defense and an outstanding go-to player in Brenton Scott. Stanford is a young team under a new head coach, Jerod Haase, however, with Reid Travis and a strong defense leading the way, the Cardinal could sneak up on some teams in the Pac-12 this season. This should be a low scoring battle however, as the Sycamores have more experience and two great leaders in Brenton Scott and Everett Clemons, I’m leaning on taking the Sycamores in a game in which the line should be close to even once released. Please check back when the line is released but unless Indiana State is favored by more than 4 points, I’m going to go with the Sycamores in this one.
Update: Indiana State is getting more points than I expected and I think the Sycamores are pick in this one.
