The Cal Poly Mustangs and the Elon Phoenix in college basketball action on Saturday.
The Cal Poly Mustangs weren’t given much ink in the preseason and the accolades they were given weren’t all positive. The Mustangs had won three in a row before falling to UIC 84-71 as a 4.5 point favorite. The defense just didn’t hold up with the Flames taking a 21 point lead with them in to the half with a late CP rally falling short. UIC fired away at 53% while the Mustangs were held to 38.5%with fewer field goals and free throws doing them in. Cal Poly received 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists from Jaylen Shead with 16 points coming from Donovan Fields while Victor Joseph and Luke Meikle combining for 20 points.

The Elon Phoenix are trying to carve out a name for themselves and open some eyes in the early going and so far they have done a pretty good job with three consecutive victories following a double overtime 85-80 decision versus Northern Illinois as a four point underdog. NIU was up nine at the break but couldn’t hold on and it cost them the win with Elon holding a 47.8%-42.5% shooting advantage with nine more long balls being decisive. The Phoenix attack leaned on the 20 point, seven board performance from Steven Santa Ava with Brian Dawkins and Tyler Saibring adding 15 points apiece and combining for eleven rebounds while Luke Eddy tossed ten points and handed out five helpers.
