We’ve got a fun college basketball matchup looming on Tuesday from State Farm Center in Champaign as the North Carolina State Wolfpack visit the Illinois Fighting Illini.
NC State comes into this one with a 5-1 record on the season so far. the Wolfpack started things out with a trio of wins 81-79 over Georgia Southern, 86-61 over St. Francis Brooklyn and 85-72 over Montana, but then lost to Creighton 112-94. The Wolfpack bounced back from that loss, however, beating Saint Joseph’s 73-63 and Loyola Chicago 79-77.
USA TODAY Sports
Terry Henderson (17.3 PPG), Torin Dorn (17.3 PPG; 6.3 RPG) and Maverick Rowan (17.0 PPG; 9.0 RPG; one game) are all deadlocked atop the statistical standings for the Wolfpack this year. Abdul-Malik Abu is also playing well and averaging in double-figures for North Carolina State with 13.8 PPG and 8.3 RPG.
Over on the Illinois side, they’re entering play here with a 4-3 record. The Illini won their first four games 81-62 over Southeast Missouri State, 79-64 over Northern Kentucky, 112-65 over McKendree and 89-69 over Detroit Mercy, but then dropped three straight 84-80 in OT against Winthrop, 89-57 against West Virginia and 72-61 against Florida State.
Leading the way for the Illini this year is Malcolm Hill, who is averaging 18.3 PPG and 7.3 RPG. Michael Finke and Tracy Abrams are also averaging in double-figures for Illinois, with Finke holding 11.0 PPG and 6.7 RPG and Abrams sitting on 10.4 PPG and 2.6 RPG.
North Carolina State is 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference games. North Carolina State is also 1-3-1 ATS in the last five Tuesday games, and 2-7 AT sin their last nine versus the Big 10.
Meanwhile, Illinois is 1-4 ATS in their last five against the ACC and 2-10-2 ATS in their last 14 Tuesday games. Illinois is also 1-7-4 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games, and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four home games.
Illinois has been on a downturn lately, but to their credit they’ve also come up against some stout competition in their last couple of games. NC State, meanwhile, has eked out of some wins they probably should have dominated, but on the whole has been getting the job done. I like the Wolfpack’s depth a little better and I think they’ll pull away down the stretch in this one. I’ll take NC State to cover.
