Over at Xfinity Center in College Park on Tuesday, we’ve got an interesting college basketball matchup looming between the Maryland Terrapins and the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Pittsburgh comes into this game with a nice 5-1 record on the year. The Panthers won their first two games against Eastern Michigan 90-93 and Gardner-Webb 99-80, but then dropped one to SMU 76-67. Pittsburgh rattled off a trio of victories afterward, however, beating Marquette 78-75, Yale 75-70 and Morehead State 76-63.
USA TODAY Sports
So far this season for the Panthers, Michael Young is leading the team in scoring and rebounding with 23.3 PPG and 8.2 RPG with 3.0 APG. Jamel Artis and Cameron Johnson are also playing well and averaging in double figures for Pittsburgh; Artis holds 19.3 PPG with 5.3 RPG and Johnson is sitting on 11.2 PPG with 3.8 RPG.
Over on the Maryland side, they’re coming into this game with a 7-0 record so far. The Terrapins opened up with victories over American 62-56, Georgetown 76-75, St. Mary’s 93-45 and Towson 71-66. Maryland then kept it going with a 77-63 win over Stony Brook, an OT 88-82 win over Richmond and a 69-68 nail-biter over Kansas State.
Melo Trimble is Maryland’s top scorer this year with a 21.1 PPG average, and Justin Jackson is second with 11.7 PPG and 7.1 RPG. Michal Cekovsky (10.3 PPG; 5.3 RPG) and Anthony Cowan (10.1 PPG; 5.1 RPG) are also averaging in double figures for the Terrapins.
Pittsburgh is 20-43-2 ATS in their last 65 games overall, and 9-24-1 ATS in their last 34 non-conference games. Pittsburgh is also 7-21 ATS in their last 28 Tuesday games, and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.
As for Maryland, they’re 2-6 ATS in the last eight Tuesday games, and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games. Maryland is also 1-4 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win, and the under is 22-8 in the Terrapins’ last 30 overall.
This is a tough one to call, as both teams have been playing pretty well but barely escaping games with a close score seemingly every time. I would imagine this one will be no different, with just two or three points separating Pittsburgh and Maryland. I’ll take the Terrapins to cover here, but really it’s one I’d stay away from.
