IUPUI Jaguars will travel to Redbird Arena to take on the Illinois State Redbirds this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The IUPUI Jaguars lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 2-4 on the season after being defeated by the SIU Edwardsville Cougars, 61-58, this past Saturday. In a tight back and forth game, IUPUI’s had a chance to force OT late in regulation however, Darrell Combs just missed a game-tying three-pointers at the buzzer. IUPUI shot just 38.1% from the field and 25.0% (4-16) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for IUPUI was Matt O’Leary who had 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. On the season, IUPUI is averaging 74.8 ppg on 42.9% shooting from the field. The Jaguars are averaging 7.7 three-pointers per game on 36.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, IUPUI has been led by Darell Combs (16.8 ppg, 3.5 apg), Matt O’Leary (12.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.0 apg), Ron Patterson (10.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 apg), and Aaron Brennan (8.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg). The Illinois State Redbirds improved to 2-2 on the season after defeating the D-II Ferris State Bulldogs, 81-67, this past Sunday. Illinois State had all they could handle from the Ferris State as the Redbirds went to halftime with just a 42-37 lead and didn’t really pull away for the victory until late in the 2nd half. Illinois State shot 45.6% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 22-11 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Redbirds was Phil Fayne who had 22 points and 6 rebounds. On the season, Illinois State is averaging 74.3 ppg on 45.1% shooting from the field. The Redbirds are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 39.0 shooting form beyond the arc. Offensively, Illinois State has been led by Deontae Hawkins (16.8 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 apg), MiKyle McIntosh (14.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.8 spg), Paris Lee (12.8 ppg, 5.5 apg, 2.3 spg), and Phil Fayne (12.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Defensively, Illinois State is allowing their opponents to average 69.3 ppg on 42.7% shooting from the field.
The Jaguars are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Redbirds are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Wednesday games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.
IUPUI has a great guard in Darell Combs and plenty experience with transfers Kellon Thomas (Kent St.) and Ron Patterson (Syracuse) however, has struggled this season on the defensive end as they ranked T-269th in scoring defense and 305th in rebound margin. Illinois State returned four starters, including Paris Lee, and should once again be one of the better team in theMVC with their outstanding defense that puts tons of pressure on the ball. Illinois State hasn’t looked as good as expected early in the season however, as I think IUPUI will have trouble finding ways to score against the Redbirds defense, I’m taking Illinois State to cover this mid-range spread at home. Take Illinois State to cover.
