Down at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables on Wednesday, we’ve got college basketball action coming between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Miami Hurricanes.
Miami comes into this game sporting a 4-2 record on the year. The Hurricanes put up wins over Western Carolina 92-43, North Florida 94-56, Penn 74-62 and Stanford 67-53 to start the season, but then dropped their next two games 73-56 against Iowa State and 65-56 against Florida.
USA TODAY Sports
Up top in scoring for Miami so far this year is Ja’Quan Newton, with 17.2 PPG, 3.0 RPG and 3.0 APG. Davon Reed is also averaging in double digits with 11.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG, while Bruce Brown is the rebound leader on 6.0 RPG and 9.3 PPG.
Over on the Rutgers side, they’re coming into this game with an unblemished 6-0 record on the season. The Scarlet Knights have recorded victories over Molloy, Drexel, DePaul, Niagara, North Texas and Hartford thus far.
On the season thus far, Nigel Johnson and Deshawn Freeman lead the way for Rutgers; Johnson holds 12.8 PPG with 4.3 RPG, and Freeman sits at 12.8 PPG with 9.0 RPG. Mike Williams is also playing well for the Scarlet Knights with 10.7 PPG and 5.0 RPG.
Rutgers is 4-1-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games, and 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight-up win. Rutgers is also 6-15-1 ATS in their last 22 games overall, and 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games.
Meanwhile, Miami is 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 home games, and 15-7 ATS in their last 22 non-conference games. Miami is also 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall, and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 versus the Big 10.
Rutgers’ unblemished record looks good on paper, but the team really hasn’t seen much of a challenge yet. That should change here, as Miami is a solid team despite coming off two straight losses. I like Newton and Reed to control this game and guide the Hurricanes toward a cover, as Rutgers doesn’t have the depth to stop them.
