We’ve got an intrastate rivalry matchup on tap in college basketball on Wednesday, as the Illinois State Redbirds head to SIU Arena in Carbondale to visit the Southern Illinois Salukis.
Illinois State enters this game with a 12-4 record this year. The Redbirds are currently on a five-game winning streak, beating Tulsa, Evansville, Loyola (CHI), Missouri State and Indiana State in that time.

Leading the way in scoring for Illinois State this season are Deontae Hawkins (14.8 PPG; 6.6 RPG) and MiKyle McIntosh (14.7 PPG; 6.7 RPG). Paris Lee (13.4 PPG; 5.3 APG) is also in double-figures for the Redbirds, while Phil Fayne is close (9.8 PPG).
Over on the Southern Illinois side, they’ve been up and down this year with a 10-7 mark. The Salukis do have a three-game winning streak to their credit, however, beating Drake, Indiana State and Missouri State this month.

Illinois State does have a decisive advantage in talent, but the Salukis are no slouches on the boards and have a handful of guys who can deliver points. I think Southern Illinois can hang here, so I’ll pick them up for a cover.
