The Western Carolina Catamounts battle college basketball rival the VMI Keydets Thursday.
The Western Carolina Catamounts have been struggling and need a win simply to boost their confidence if for nothing else. The Catamounts have opened the SoCon schedule with three defeat in a row following a 76-57 loss at UNC Greensboro as a 12 point underdog on Saturday where the game was competitive until the Spartans upped the intensity in the second half to pull away. WCU sank shots at 34% while UNCG burned the nets at 57% which negated the Catamounts 15 more shot attempts. Haboubacar Mutombo led WCU with 14 points on 6-10 with Onno Steger and Adam Shedd combining for 19 points and nine boards.

The VMI Keydets are in the same position as their counterparts in that they have lost four in a row and are staring at an 0-3 start in the Southern. The Keydets are coming off of a 79-74 loss at the Citadel as a five point underdog on Saturday that was back and forth until VMI pulled away late. The Bulldogs held a slight 45%-41% shooting edge with a boxscore that was difficult to determine what were the winning stats. QJ Patterson kept VMI in the game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists on 9-18 with Armani Branch adding eleven point and seven boards while Trey Chapman and Adrian Rich combined for 19 points.
Western Carolina are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 vs. Southern and Western Carolina are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the under is 7-3 in Western Carolina last 10 Thursday games.
Picking the winner is kind of like splitting hairs but if this is high scoring VMI would have an edge…
