Out at Tom Gola Arena on Saturday, the Saint Peter’s Peacocks and the La Salle Explorers will be meeting up in college basketball activity.
Saint Peters posted a pretty solid campaign overall in 2016-17, finishing out pre-tournament play at 19-13 after a loss to Iona snapped a seven-game win streak. The Peacocks caught fire in the CIT, however, taking the championship with wins over Albany, Texas State, Furman and Texas A&M-CC.

St. Peter’s will lose some key names from last year, most notably Quadir Welton (12.0 PPG; 8.3 RPG), Trevis Wyche (11.3 PPG) and Antwon Portley (7.8 PPG). The Peacocks will be bringing back Nick Griffin this year after his 8.8 PPG last season, which was third on the team.
Over on the La Salle side, they finished at .500 with a 15-15 record last year. After starting out at 11-5 over their first 16 games, the Explorers began a prolonged skid that saw them win just four more games the rest of the season.
Although the Explorers will miss out on Jordan Price (15.3 PPG; 4.3 RPG) this year, they retain two very important pieces in BJ Johnson (17.6 PPG; 6.3 RPG) and Pookie Powell (13.7 PPG; 4.5 RPG; 3.1 APG) who should be able to fill in the gaps.
The over is 7-3 in La Salle’s last 10 home games and 8-3 in their last 11 Saturday games. The Explorers are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Saturday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
Meanwhile, the under is 8-2-2 in the Peacocks’ last 12 overall and 19-7-1 in their last 27 road games. St. Peter’s is also 37-18 ATS in their last 55 road games and 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
Saint Peter’s will look a lot different this year, and they’re fairly young with just two seniors (and a ton of guards) on the roster. That should lead to a pretty fast-paced and unpredictable season for the Peacocks. Interestingly enough, La Salle will be playing relatively small as well which makes this a pretty fun matchup. With the returning experience working in La Salle’s favor, however, I like the Explorers to bag a cover here.
