On Sunday afternoon from SMU Moody Coliseum in University Park, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the SMU Mustangs will be meeting up in college basketball action.
The Warhawks are coming off a pretty disappointing 9-24 season last year. That result included a four-game, five-game and an eight-game losing streak, and UL Monroe was only able to put together back-to-back wins once.
USA TODAY Sports
The Warhawks fell 83-73 to NIT champs TCU in their first outing. In that game, Sam McDaniel was the leading scorer for UL Monroe, providing 21 points, three steals, seven rebounds and three assists off the bench. Jordon Harris also chipped in with 16 points, two rebounds and four assists.
Over on the SMU side, they’re coming off a successful pre-tournament season, going 30-4 overall and winning their final 15 games. That said, the Mustangs lost to USC in a shocker 66-65 in the first round of the Tournament.
In their first game this season, SMU managed a 78-67 victory over UMBC to start out at 1-0. Shake Milton was the high scorer for SMU in that one, with 28 points, two steals, three rebounds and an assist. Jarrey Foster also had a strong outing with 17 points, two blocks, eight rebounds and three assists.
The over is 5-1-1 in the Mustangs’ last seven home games and 7-1-1 in their last nine overall. SMU is also 3-0-1 ATS in their last four Sunday games and 24-6-1 ATS in their last 31 games as a favorite.
Meanwhile, UL Monroe is 3-14 ATS in their last 17 Sunday games and 3-1-1 ATS in hitter last five road games. The under is 21-8 in the Warhawks’ last 29 road games and 16-6 in their last 22 games as a road underdog.
UL Monroe put up a pretty plucky performance in their first outing, and hung in there better than expected. As for SMU, they started out slowly, losing at halftime 45-38 before allowing just 22 points in the second half. I like the Warhawks to eke into this one and cover.
