The Delaware State Hornets will travel to Wintrust Arena to take on the DePaul Blue Demons this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Delaware State Hornets opened their 2016-17 with a confidence building, 71-50, victory over the D-III Cairn University Highlanders this past Friday. Delaware State had little trouble putting away the Highlanders after securing a 35-20 lead at the end of the 1st half. Delaware State was outstanding defensively in the victory after holding Cairn University to just 34.4% shooting from the field and 20.0% (4-20) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Hornets was Simon Okolue who had a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Also contributing for the Hornets was Artem Tavakalyan (18 points, 7 rbeounds, 4 assists, 1 steal) and Jonathan Mitchell (13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, and a steal). Delaware State finished last season with just a 10-22 (7-9 MEAC) record, however, have one of their best players returning in Kavon Waller who averaged 10.0 ppg and 3.9 rpg last season. Also returning for the Hornets will be Artem Tavakalyan (6.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg) and Kobe Gantz (4.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg) who will join the Hornets starting five.

The DePaul Blue Demons opened up their season with a tough game against the 14th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and although they lost the game by a 72-58 margin, the Blue Demons gave their fans some encouragement that DePaul is ready to compete in the Big East this season. DePaul played Notre Dame tough, however, couldn’t fight back after a 7-1 Fighting Irish run gave Notre Dame a 67-51 lead with just 3:59 left in regulation. DePaul struggled a bit on the offensive end in the loss after shooting just 33.8% from the field and 22.7% (5-22) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Blue Demons was Eli Cain who had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Also contributing for DePaul was Tre’Darius McCallum (14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal) and Devin Gage (10 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 steals). DePaul finished last season with just a 9-23 (2-12 Big East) and although they no longer have Billy Garrett Jr. (14.9 ppg, 3.3 apg), DePaul is encouraged with their backcourt that will consist of Eli Cain (15.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.7 apg), Max Strus, Austin Grandstaff, and Brandon Cyrus (6.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg).
The Hornets finished last season with a 2-3 ATS record and was a 2-2 ATS on the road. DePaul finished last season 13-18 ATS and are 8-10 ATS in their last 10 home games.
DePaul is most likely going to pick up their first win at their brand-new home stadium, however, Delaware State is a team that has the potential to keep this one within the number with their outside shooting ability. DePaul ranked just 304th in defensive FG% last season and as I think Delaware State will be able to put up at least some points with their spread offense, I think the Hornets do enough to keep this one within the large number. Take Delaware State and the points.
