Down in Columbia at Colonial Life Arena on Monday, the Western Michigan Broncos and the South Carolina Gamecocks will be meeting up in college basketball action.
Western Michigan is coming off a 16-16 season overall last year. The Broncos started out at just 7-15 but rattled off a nice nine-game win streak late in the season.
USA TODAY Sports
Western Michigan is starting things off well at 1-0 following a win in their opener 103-72 over Siena Heights. The top Broncos scorer in that one was Thomas Wilder, who had 16 points, six assists and two rebounds. Brandon Johnson also had a nice outing with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Over on the South Carolina side, they had a successful season last year, going 22-10 in pre-tournament play (but started out at 19-4). In the NCAA Tournament, the Gamecocks beat Marquette, Duke, Baylor and Florida before falling to Gonzaga in the Final Four 77-73.
South Carolina also recorded a win in their first game this year, beating Wofford 73-52. In that game, Maik Kotsar led the way for the Gamecocks with 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Frank Booker also played well with 12 points and a steal on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Gamecocks are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games. South Carolina is also 6-0 ATS in their last six ames overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games as a home favorite.
Meanwhile, Western Michigan is 1-5 ATS in their last six Monday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite. The Broncos are also 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and the under is 5-0 in their last five road games.
South Carolina certainly has some high hopes this year, and will be looking to do some damage in the national tournament once again. The Gamecocks were a bit underwhelming against Wofford, however, despite winning by 21. The good news for South Carolina is that they got 28 points from their bench and had a solid effort across the board. I like the Gamecocks to continue to build and post a cover here.
