The UNC Wilmington Seahawks will travel to John M. Belk Arena to take on the Davidson Wildcats this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.
The UNC Wilmington Seahawks started off their 2016-17 season with an impressive 105-81 victory over the D-III NC Wesleyan Battling Bishops, 105-81, this past Saturday. UNC Wilmington was outstanding on the offensive end throughout the game and had little trouble securing the victory after taking a 57-40 halftime lead. UNC Wilmington shot an impressive 50.0% from the field and outrebounded the Battling Bishops by a 51-41 margin. Leading the way for the Seahawks was Devontae Cacok who had a double-double with 21 points, 16 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. UNC Wilmington finished last season with an impressive 29-5 (15-3 CAA) record and earned an NCAA bid after winning the CAA Championship, however, didn’t last past the 1st round after losing to the Virginia Cavaliers in a tough 76-71 loss. UNC Wilmington will have some work cut out for them this season to get back to the NCAA Tournament after losing 4 starters from last year’s team, including C.J. Bryce (17.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Chris Flemmings (15.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg), however, have a great player to build around in big-man Devontae Cacok who averaged almost a double-double last season. The Seahawks will hope that Jordon Talley (7.6 ppg, 2.6 apg) and Jaylen Flores (3.1 ppg, 1.0 rpg) can provide more production as they crack the starting five this season.

The Davidson Wildcats kicked off their season with an easy 110-62 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 110-62, this past Friday. Davidson dominated Charleston Southern on both ends of the court throughout the game and had no trouble securing the victory after taking a 58-23 halftime lead. Davidson shot 50.0% from the field and 49.1% (26-53) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Wildcats was Jon Axel Gudmundsson who had 24 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals. Davidson finished last season 17-15 (8-10 A-10) record and although they made a strong run in the A-10 tournament as the 9-seed, couldn’t get past Rhode Island in the semifinals. Davidson no longer has the services of Jack Gibbs (22.1 ppg, 4.1 apg) however, Bob McKillop’s Wildcats, should be a dangerous team in the A-10 this season with Peyton Aldridge (20.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 2.2 apg), Will Magarity (8.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg), and Jon Axel Gudmundsson (8.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.1 spg) all returning. Davidson also returns Rusty Reigel (4.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.8 apg) and will hope that newcomer, Kellan Grady, can provide additional stability in the Wildcats backcourt.
The Seahawks finished last season with a 15-15-1 ATS record and is 7-6 ATS in their last 13 away games. The Wildcats finished last season with a 15-15 ATS record and are 4-5 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite.
UNC Wilmington has been one of the better mid-major teams over the past two seasons, and although they still should be one of the contenders in the CAA, UNC Wilmington will have trouble continuing their same level success unless they find some support to go with Devontae Cacok. Davidson no longer has their best scorer in Jack Gibbs, however, the Wildcats did return their other eight leading scorers and have one of the best players in the A-10 in Peyton Aldridge. Davidson might have a tough time slowing down Devontae Cacok, however, Davidson is an experienced team that has talent in both the backcourt and frontcourt and I think they’ll be able to secure a double-digit win at home in this one.
