Omaha allowed the Sooners to shoot 55.7% from the field and was outrebounded by Oklahoma by a 46-31 margin in the loss. The New Mexico Lobos has little trouble securing a win in their season opener as the New Mexico defeated the Northern New Mexico Eagles, 147-76, this past Saturday. New Mexico had no trouble scoring the basketball against the Eagles and had no trouble cruising to victory after taking a commanding 74-35 halftime lead. Leading the way for the Lobos was Chris McNeal who had a double-double with 24 points, 10 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. New Mexico had 8 players who reached double-digit scoring and shot an impressive 64.7% from the field and 46.2% (18-39) from beyond the arc. New Mexico is a team that has many questions coming into the 2017-18 season after they lost 10 players from last year’s 17-14 (10-8 MW) squad, including their best players Elijah Brown (18.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.1 apg) and Tim Williams (17.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg). New head coach, Paul Weir, will hope that returning players Sam Longwood (7.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Dane Kuiper (6.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg) can provider some veteran leadership for the lobos and that newcomers Craig McNeal and Toledo transfer, Antonio Jackson, can make immediate impacts for New Mexico.
Omaha went 9-6-1 ATS on the road last season and is currently 1-1 ATS overall on the season. New Mexico had a 11-17 ATS record last season and was just 4-8 ATS at home.
Omaha has never had a hard time finding ways to score the basketball with their up-tempo style of play, however, with a lot of new faces on the Mavericks, Omaha will need to improve on the defensive end if they are going to have a success season. New Mexico comes into this season with a ton of question marks this season after losing basically their whole team from last season and although their offense looked great in their season opener, it’s important not to read too much into that performance as it was only against Northern New Mexico. This is going to be a high scoring game, however, as I just don’t trust New Mexico after losing all their talent from last year’s team, I think Omaha will keep this one close enough to cover with the points. I’m taking Omaha and the over in this one.
