The MAC and the Big 12 face off on the hardwood as the Ball State Cardinals face off against the Oklahoma Sooners as part of the Phil Knight Invitational from Norman, Oklahoma on Wednesday night.
The Ball State Cardinals will look to rebound after suffering a heartbreaking loss in their opener, falling 78-77 at the hands of Dayton on Friday. Tayler Persons and Tahjai Teague shared the team lead with 14 points apiece, with Teague logging 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the double-double, while Persons dished out a team-high 8 assists in the losing effort. Zach Gunn added 11 points of his own to round out the double-digit scoring for the Cardinals in the loss. Every Cardinal that saw action in the game, had at least one basket and one rebound, something you don’t always see in games nowadays, giving head coach James Whitford hope that he will see balanced efforts like this as the season goes along. As a team, Ball State is scoring 77 points per game on 46.3% shooting from the field, 33.3% from behind the arc and 75% from the foul line this season.

The Oklahoma Sooners will be looking to add another win to their belt after winning their season opener by a final score of 108-89, defeating Omaha in the process. 6 different Sooners scored in double figures, led by Trae Young’s 15 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds for the double-double. Christian James added 14 points, as did Jamuni McNeace who went 6 for 7 with 5 boards and a whopping 6 blocks, while Matt Freeman went 5 of 6 from the floor and a perfect 3 for 3 from behind the arc for his 13 points. Brady Manek added 11 points, while Jodran Shepard chipped in 10 points with 6 assists. Khadeem Lattin added 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds in just 11 minutes on the floor for the Sooners. As a team, Oklahoma is scoring 108 points per game on 55.7% shooting from the field, 32% from behind the arc and 81.5% from the foul line this season.
Ball State is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the under is 3-0-2 in their last 5 road games. Oklahoma is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games while the over is 7-1 in their last 8 games following a win.
Give credit where it’s due, as Ball State has put together a fairly tough non-conference slate, and will be battle-tested once conference play rolls around. But Oklahoma just shot the lights out against an Omaha team that’s capable offensively and finished in the top 15 in the country in terms of scoring last season. The Sooners didn’t cover, but given a more reasonable line here, I think Oklahoma comes out firing again and covers against the Cardinals in emphatic fashion.
