Wednesday night college basketball features a matchup between the Valparaiso Crusaders and the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars.
The Valparaiso Crusaders take the floor in their first road game of the 2017-18 season with a visit to the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. Valparaiso upped their record to 2-0 after an 83-46 rout of the subdivision Trinity Christian Trolls which was never competitive. The Crusaders took a 19 point lead in to the break and kept the hammer down for a full 40 minutes.

The Valpo defense gave up just 31.2% shooting and forced 25 turnovers while dominating the glass to the tune of 42-16 with 16 offensive rebounds. The Crusaders sank shots at 49% for 12 more field goals while turning 23 Trinity Christian personal fouls in to a 22-8 advantage at the foul line.
Tevonn Walker paced the Valparaiso offense with a contest high 18 points on 7-15 from the field with Markus Golder next in line with 17 points on 6-9 from the floor. Derrik Smits added ten points and eight rebounds on 5-5 shooting followed by the twosome of Parker Hazen and John Kizer who combined to give Valpo another 17 points with Kizer hauling in a game high nine rebounds.
The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars aim for the upset of the visiting Valparaiso Crusaders in a Wednesday night bout. SIU-Edwardsville dropped their opener at the Purdue Boilermakers 105-74 as a 29.5 point underdog. Purdue rolled to a 20 point lead after 20 minute and continued to build the lead until time ran out.
The Cougars struggled the most at the defensive end of the floor with Purdue connecting at 59% from the field and owning a massive 24-2 advantage at the charity stripe. SIUE held a +10 margin on the backboards and gave the ball away 15 times with 38.3% shooting obviously not enough to stay competitive. Throw in five double digit scorers for the Boilermakers and the final score tells us all we need to know.
SIU-Edwardsville did have a few bright spots and top scorer Julian Torres was one with 20 points and five pulls on 8-14 from the floor including a perfect 4-4 effort from beyond the arc. Daniel Kinchen dropped 17 points but was only 6-17 from the field while Justin Benton gave the Cougars 15 points and six assists on 7-13 shooting.
Valparaiso are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games and Valparaiso are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and Valparaiso are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. SIU-Edwardsville are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 home games and SIU-Edwardsville are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 Wednesday games and under is 5-2 in SIU-Edwardsville last 7 non-conference games.
We know nothing about the Crusaders beating a pair of subdivision squads and we know nothing about SIU-Edwardsville getting waffled by a vastly superior Purdue. I simply will back the points and hope SIUE isn’t that bad…
