The Eastern Illinois Panthers play their second road game to begin the 2017-18 with a trip to face instate rival the Western Illinois Leathernecks on Wednesday. Eastern Illinois fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers 72-68 in their season opener as an 11.5 point underdog. Eastern Illinois played well defensively with the Cornhuskers hitting shots at 38.6% including just 5-16 from beyond the arc. The Panthers failed to capitalize with only 39.7% shooting of their own for a few more baskets but Nebraska won it at the charity stripe with eleven more makes. The Panthers had no answer for Glynn Watson Jr. who paced the Huskers with a game high 21 points.
The Eastern Illinois offense was balanced with four players reaching double figures is scoring with led by Terrell Lewis with 13 points on 5-9 from the floor followed by Jajuan Starks with 12 points and six pulls on 6-12 from the floor. Montell Goodwin tossed in ten points and snagged rebounds while D’Angelo Jackson and Ray Crossland combined for 17 points.
The Western Illinois Leathernecks are aiming for a 2-0 start to the season when the Eastern Illinois Panthers come to town on Wednesday night. Western Illinois kicked of the season as expected with a 109-68 romp over the visiting St. Mary’s (MN) Cardinals.
