The Harvard Crimson snapped their 3-game losing streak and improved to 3-3 on the season after defeating the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, 77-71, this past Friday. Harvard led by a 34-28 margin at halftime and had no trouble securing the victory after a 13-5 run gave the Crimson a 72-63 lead with just 3:11 left in regulation. Harvard was solid on the defensive end throughout the game as they held the Hawks to just 36.1% shooting from the field and 26.9% (7-26) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Crimson was Chris Lewis who had 21 points, 9 rebounds, and an assist. On the season, Harvard is averaging 71.5 ppg on 42.2% shooting from the field. The Crimson are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 27.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Harvard has been led by Bryce Aiken (18.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.0 apg), Seth Towns (15.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.0 spg), Chris Lewis (13.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.3 spg, 1.7 bpg), and Corey Johnson (5.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.4 apg). The Cal State Fullerton Titans improved to 2-3 on the season after defeating the Sacramento State Hornets, 68-63, this past Friday. Cal State Fullerton was solid on the offensive end of the court throughout the game and pulled away late from Sacramento State after a 7-2 run gave Cal State Fullerton a 64-58 lead with just :44 seconds left in regulation. Cal State Fullerton shot 52.4% from the field and 44.4% (4-9) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Titans was Khalil Ahmad who had 25 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and a steal. On the season, Cal State Fullerton is averaging 60.2 ppg on 38.3% shooting from the field. The Titans are averaging 4.2 three-pointers per game on 24.1% shooting form beyond the arc. Offensively, Cal State Fullerton has been led by Kyle Allman (14.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.4 apg), Khalil Ahmed (11.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg), Jackson Rowe (10.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 bpg), and Austen Awosika (5.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.8 apg). Defensively, Cal State Fullerton is holding their opponents to an average of 64.4 ppg on 38.5% shooting from the field. The Titans have a rebound margin of 1.2 and a turnover margin of -2.2.
The Crimson are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Titans are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Harvard has a ton of young talent in Bryce Aiken and Seth Towns, however, the Crimson have struggled a bit offensively this season as they rank just 248th in scoring offense, 265th in FG%, and 326th in 3P-FG%. Cal State Fullerton was a surprise team last season in the Big West and have been outstanding on the defensive end this season as they rank 55th in scoring defense and defensive FG%. Harvard is the better overall team however, I’m not convinced that the Crimson will solve their offensive woes on the road and as I think the Titans will be able to keep this one close, I’m taking Cal State Fullerton and the points.
