The Chattanooga Mocs improved to 3-3 on the season after defeating the NAIA Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs, 95-60, this past Saturday. Chattanooga had no trouble shutting down the Bulldogs offense early, and easily pulled away for victory after taking a 43-21 halftime lead. Chattanooga held Tennessee Wesleyan who had 33.3% from the field and 15.0% (3-20) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Mocs was David Jean-Baptiste who had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal. On the season, Chattanooga was averaging 73.8 ppg on 47.5% shooting from the field. The Mocs are averaging 9.8 three-pointers per game on 41.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Chattanooga has been led by Makinde London (15.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.4 bpg), Joshua Phillips (14.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 1.0 apg), Rodney Chatman (12.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.0 apg), and David Jean-Baptiste (11.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.8 apg). The Akron Zips dropped to 2-1 on the season after being defeated by the Dayton Flyers, 73-60, this past Saturday. Akron had a 37-32 lead at halftime, however, struggled offensively in the 2nd half, and couldn’t fight back after Dayton took a 66-50 lead with 6:14 left to play in regulation. Akron allowed Dayton to shoot 51.9% from the field and 42.9% (9-21) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Zips was Daniel Utomi who had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. On the season, Akron is averaging 67.7 ppg on 39.6% shooting from the field. The Zips are averaging 9.7 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Akron has been led by Daniel Utomi (23.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.0 apg), Malcolm Duvivier (9.7 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 5.3 apg), Jimond Ivey (9.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.7 apg), and Eric Parrish (8.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg). Defensively, Akron is holding their opponents to an average of 63.0 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Zips have a rebound margin of -0.3 and a turnover margin of 0.7.
The Mocs are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games however, are just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Zips are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games.
Chattanooga lost a ton of experience and their top-5 scorers from last year’s 19-12 team and although they’ve shot the three-pointer well this season (T-48th in 3P Made Per game; 29th in 3P %), the Mocs have struggled overall on the offensive end as they rank just 207th in scoring offense. Similar to Chattanooga, Akron loss a bunch of talent and have also struggled scoring the basketball, as outside of the great numbers that Daniel Utomi has put up, no one else on the Zips roster is averaging double-digits this season. This should be a defensive minded the game however, as I think the Zips Jimond Ivey will start finding his offensive rhythm soon, I think the Zips do enough at home to cover this home spread.
