The Northern Iowa Panthers had their 5-game winning streak snapped, dropping them to 5-2 on the year, after being defeated by the 5th ranked Villanova Wildcats, 64-50, in the Championship Game of the Battle 4 Atlantis this past Friday. Northern Iowa found themselves down by just a 32-29 margin at halftime, however, struggled offensively in the 2nd half and couldn’t fight back after a 8-0 Villanova run gave the Wildcats a 59-45 lead with 2:03 left in regulation. Northern Iowa shot 41.5% from the field and just 26.1% (6-23) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Panthers was Bennett Koch who had a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks. On the season, Northern Iowa is averaging 67.3 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field The Panthers are averaging 8.1 three-pointers per game on 33.7% shooting from the field. Offensively, Northern Iowa has been led by Bennett Koch (15.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.1 bpg), Juwan McCloud (12.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.3 spg), Tywhon Pickford (10.9 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 1.1 apg), and Isaiah Brown (7.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.6 apg). Defensively, Northern Iowa is holding their opponents to an average of 57.1 ppg on 36.0% shooting from the field. The Panthers have a rebound margin of 7.7 and a turnover margin of -2.4.
The Rebels are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. MVC opponents. The Panthers are 8-20 ATS in their last 28 games following a ATS loss and are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. Mountain West opponents.
UNLV has been an absolute force on the offensive end to start the season as they currently rank 4th in scoring offense, 4th in assists per game, and 15th in FG%. The Rebels also have dominated the boards with a 9th ranked rebound margin and have two of the top three rebounders in the country right now in Shakur Juiston and Brandon McCoy. Northern Iowa played well in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament with wins over SMU and NC State and have been great on the defensive end as they rank 8th in scoring defense and 12th in defensive FG%. This should be one of the more interesting games of the night however, I like how the Panthers have played in their last three games and as I think their defense will give UNLV trouble, I’m taking Northern Iowa to cover this small home spread.
