We’ve got intrastate college basketball action coming from Diddle Arena on Wednesday as the Eastern Kentucky Colonels and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers meet up.
Eastern Kentucky is currently 3-3 on the young season. After losing a pair versus Prairie View A&M and Eastern Washington, the Colonels bagged a win versus Asbury in their last game. In that one, Peyton Broughton was the top Colonels scorer with 21 points and five rebounds.
USA TODAY Sports
Leading the scoring for Eastern Kentucky this year is Nick Mayo, with 19.8 PPG and 8.2 RPG. Also in double-figures for the Colonels are Dedric Boyd (16.2 PPG; 5.0 RPG) and DeAndre Dishman (12.3 PPG; 5.7 RPG).
Over on the Western Kentucky side, they’re currently 4-2 on the year. After a loss to Villanova on November 22, the Hilltoppers have won two versus Purdue and SMU. In that SMU game, Western Kentucky’s Lamonte Bearden was the team’s top scorer with 14 points, six assists and five steals.
Topping out the scoring for the Hilltoppers this year is Darius Thompson, with 13.8 PPG, and Dwight Coleby has 12.3 PPG with 7.8 RPG. Also in double-digits for Western Kentucky are Bearden (11.5 PPG), Traveion Hollingsworth (11.2 PPG), Justin Johnson (10.8 PPG; 9.0 RPG) and Jake Ohmer (10.7 PPG).
Eastern Kentucky is 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 versus Conference USA and 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games. The Colonels are also 1-5 ATS in their last six non-conference games and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 following an ATS win. Western Kentucky is also 0-5 ATS in their last five versus Ohio Valley and the under is 7-1 in their last eight home games.
The Colonels used a big second half to bury Asbury in their last game, outscoring them 60-38 in that frame. As for the Hilltoppers, their strength this year is depth, as they’ve got a lot of guys who can score. I like the Hilltoppers to stay hot here and cover.
