Coming up on Friday afternoon, we’ve got college basketball action looming between the Towson Tigers and the La Salle Explorers in the Belfast Classic from Northern Ireland.
Towson comes into this game at 6-1 so far, losing their first game before rattling off wins over Frostburg State, Loyola (MD), Florida Atlantic, Pennsylvania, Georgia Southern and St. Mary’s (MD). In that St. Mary’s game, Tigers guard Zane Martin put up 24 points and five 3-pointers.
USA TODAY Sports
So far this year, Martin leads the way for Towson with 16.7 PPG. Also in double-figures for the Tigers are Mike Morsell (12.9 PPG; 3.4 RPG) and Brian Starr (10.4 PPG), while Justin Gorham is tops in rebounding with 6.3 RPG and 8.9 PPG.
Over on the La Salle side, they’re sitting at 4-3 so far. The Explorers opened up with three wins, then lost to Northwestern, Boston Colege and Miami before beating Temple their last time out. In the Temple game, La Salle’s Pookie Powell put up 29 points to lead the way.
Heading up the scoring for the Explorers this season is BJ Johnson, with 22.1 PPG and a team-high 9.7 RPG. Powell is the only other La Salle player in double-figures with 16.4 PPG and 3.6 RPG to his credit.
The Tigers are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five against the Atlantic 10. Towson is also 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 16-6 ATS in their last 22 Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Explorers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Colonial. La Salle is also 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games and 0-5 ATS in their last five neutral-site games.
There was little doubt Towson would come out on top in their last game, which was a little different from their 3-point scare against Georgia Southern. As for La Salle, they easily could have laid down against Temple but to their credit they stormed back and took the win. I like the Explorers to stay strong and cover here.
