The Line: Appalachian State Mountaineers -7 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
We have some non-conference action on the hardwood, as the South Florida Bulls face off against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a college basketball matchup.
The South Florida Bulls will try to climb above .500 after dropping back-to-back games including a 79-78 overtime heartbreaker to Elon in their last outing. Payton Banks led the team with 23 points on 9 of 18 shooting with 4 triples and 6 rebounds. Stephen Jiggets came right behind with 21 points on 9 of 18 shooting as well with 3 triples with a pair of steals, while Terrence Samuel chipped in 14 points and a team-high 4 assists to round out the scoring in double figures for USF in the losing effort. Tulio Da Silva scored just 1 point, but added a team-high 9 rebounds in the loss. Banks leads the team in scoring with 13.4 points per game while Da Silva is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.6 boards per game and Samuel is the leading assist getter with 4.6 assists per game this season. As a team, South Florida is scoring 64.1 points per game on 41.4% shooting from the field, 34.5% from behind the arc and 77% from the foul line this season.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers will also try to climb above .500, also sitting at 4-4 thanks to an 85-72 loss to VCU last time out. Ronshad Shabazz led the team with 19 points on 7 of 17 shooting with 5 rebounds, while Justin Forrest chipped in 12 points with 3 triples and Isaac Johnson went a perfect 5 for 5 from the floor with 6 rebounds and a pair of steals. Griffin Kinney added 8 points along with team-highs of 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the losing effort. Shabazz leads the team in scoring with 22.1 points per game, while Johnson leads the way in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game and O’Showen Williams is the team’s leading assist man, putting up 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Appalachian State is scoring 90 points per game on 46.5% shooting from the field, 36.8% from behind the arc and 65% from the foul line this season.
South Florida is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 Saturday games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against the Sun Belt while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Appalachian State is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games following a loss.
Even though these two come in with identical records, South Florida in my opinion has the worse losses, with defeats against teams like Morgan State and Elon, while App State has fallen to the likes of VCU, Iowa State and Western Michigan, with an OT loss to James Madison in there as well. All in all, I think the Mountaineers’ punch offensively is the difference in this one as Appalachian State wins and covers.
