The VCU Rams improved to 4-3 on the season after defeating the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 85-72, this past Tuesday. After a high scoring 1st half, VCU picked up their defensive intensity in the 2nd half and pulled away from the Mountaineers after a 11-2 Rams run gave VCU a 69-56 lead with 9:34 left in regulation. VCU shot 49.2% from the field, 50.0% (10-20) from beyond the arc, and forced Appalachian State into committing 19 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Rams was Jonathan Williams who had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and a block. On the season, VCU is averaging 81.0 ppg on 47.2% shooting from the field. The Rams are averaging 9.1 three-pointers per game on 39.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensviely, VCU has been led by Justin Tillman (13.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.3 bpg), De’Riante Jenkins (13.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.9 spg), Khris Lane (11.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg), and Jonathan Williams (11.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 6.3 apg, 1.7 spg). Defensively, VCU is allowing their opponents to average 75.6 ppg on 45.4% shooting from the field. The Rams have a rebound margin of 1.3 and a turnover margin of 1.7.
The Monarchs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points. The Rams are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games vs. C-USA opponents however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
Old Dominion has a great duo in Ahmad Carter and B.J. Stith and come into this matchup ranked 14th in scoring defense, 38th in defensive FG%, and T-63rd in turnover margin. VCU has been solid on the offensive end, especially from three-point range, however the Rams defense hasn’t been as strong as we’ve seen in the past as VCU ranks just T-240th in scoring defense and T-123rd in turnover margin. Old Dominion does a good job protecting the ball on the offensive end as I think their defense will give VCU some trouble, I’m taking the Monarchs to cover with the points on the road.
