Coming up Monday evening out at McKeon Pavilion, the Sacramento State Hornets will be meeting up with the Saint Mary’s Gaels in college basketball activity.
Sacramento State enters this game with a 1-6 record so far, losing to UC Davis, San Diego State, CS Fullerton and Saint Joseph’s in their last four. In that Saint Joseph’s game, Hornets forward Justin Strings led the team with 22 points.
USA TODAY Sports
On the year, Strings is the top scorer for Sacramento State with 16.9 PPG and a team-high 7.6 RPG. Jordan Tolbert is the only other Hornets player in double-figures (11.1 PPG), but Joshua Patton is close (9.0 PPG; 6.0 RPG).
Over on the Saint Mary’s side, they’re currently 6-2 on the season. The Gaels lost two in a row to Washington State and Georgia but came back with a win over California in their last outing. In that Cal game, the top Gaels scorer was Calvin Hermanson with 22 points.
Tops in scoring for Saint Mary’s this year is Jock Landale with 19.5 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Hermanson (15.4 PPG; 3.5 RPG) and Emmett Naar (14.1 PPG; 8.9 APG) are also averaging in double-digits for the Gaels.
The Hornets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and 18-6 ATS in their last 24 games overall. Sacramento State is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games and 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine Monday games.
Meanwhile, St. Mary’s is 6-0 ATS in their last six Monday games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six home games. The Gaels are also 12-4 ATS in their last 16 versus the Big Sky and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall.
Most of the Sacramento State scorers didn’t shoot all that well in the Saint Joseph’s game, and it caught up with them down the stretch. As for Saint Mary’s, they were reeling after getting knocked out of the top 25 following their two straight losses, but to their credit they had a solid outing against Cal. Still, I think Sacramento State can hang around here and cover with such a thick line on this game.
