The Marshall Thundering Herd improved to 5-3 on the season after defeating the Akron Zips, 86-64, this past Saturday. In their best defensive performance of the season, Marshall had no trouble putting away the Zips after taking a 44-29 halftime lead. Marshall held Akron to just 38.1% shooting from the field and 25.0% (6-24) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Thundering Herd was Ajdin Penava who had a double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. On the season, Marshall is averaging 91.3 ppg on 48.9% shooting from the field. The Thundering Herd are averaging 10.1 three-pointers per game on 35.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marshall has been led by Jon Elmore (24.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 8.4 apg, 2.4 spg), C.J. Burks (18.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.9 apg), Ajdin Penava (17.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 1.4 apg, 3.5 bpg), and Jarrod West (12.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.1 spg). Defensively, Marshall is allowing their opponents to average 84.3 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Thundering Herd have a rebound margin of -2.1 and a turnover margin of 2.6.
The Mocs are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 road games and just 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win. The Thundering herd are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 Tuesday games and 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 home games.
Chattanooga has been one of the better teams in the Southern Conference over the past few season, however, this year’s version of the Mocs has struggled and currently come into this matchup ranked 232nd in scoring offense, T-217th in turnover margin, and 163rd in defensive FG%. Marshall rankx just 335th in scoring defense, even after their strong performance aginast Akron, however, Marshall can put up points in bunches as they rank T-8th in scoring offense and 52nd in FG%. Chattanooga will have to be solid from beyond the arc to have a chance in this one, however, I think Marshall is just going to be too much on the offensive end at home and that they cover this spread.
