The Old Dominion Monarchs dropped to 5-3 on the season after being defeated by the VCU Rams, 82-75, this past Saturday. Old Dominion held a double-digit lead midway through the 2nd half however, couldn’t fight back after a 25-6 run gave VCU a 73-65 lead with 1:35 left in regulation. Old Dominion allowed VCU to shoot 49.1% from the field and 52.6% (10-19) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Monarchs was Randy Haynes who had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. On the season, Old Dominion is averaging 70.4 ppg on 45.5% shooting from the field. The Monarchs are averaging 5.6 three-pointers per game on 32.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Old Dominion has been led by B.J. Stith (13.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.5 spg), Ahmad Caver (12.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.6 spg), Trey Porter (11.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg), and Randy Haynes (11.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.0 spg). Defensively, Old Dominion is holding their opponents to an average of 62.4 ppg on 39.4% shooting from the field. The Monarchs have a rebound margin of 3.5 and a turnover margin of 3.5.
The Spiders are 12-2-2 ATS in their last 16 Wednesday games however, just 19-43-4 ATS in their last 66 non-conference games. The Monarchs are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games following a straight up loss however, are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
Richmond knew they were probably going to take a step back this season, however, the drop off has been severe as the Spiders rank just 341st in scoring offense, 335th in rebound margin, and 350th in defensive FG%. Old Dominion couldn’t pull a road victory at VCU, however the Monarchs have a talented team that can really get it done on the defensive end as Old Dominion ranks T-31st in scoring defense, 54th in defensive FG%, and T-55th in turnover margin. This is a pretty big spread, however, I just don’t see how Richmond is going to score more than 45-55 points against the Old Dominion defense and I think the Monarchs will do enough at home to cover this double-digit spread.
