Out at Reynolds Center on Thursday, the East Carolina Pirates and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane will be matching up in college basketball activity.
East Carolina comes into this one at 6-5 on the season. The Pirates are 4-1 in their last five games, beating UNC Wilmington, Delaware State, Campbell and Grambling in that time. In the Grambling game, East Carolina’s BJ Tyson led the team on 20 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Tyson is the leading scorer for the Pirates so far with 15.5 PPG and 4.4 RPG. Also in double-figures for East Carolina are Isaac Fleming (14.6 PPG; 4.5 APG) and Kentrell Barkley (13.0 PPG; 6.9 RPG).
As for Tulsa, they’re currently 7-5 on the year. The Golden Hurricane had a three-game win streak going but lost 71-59 to Oklahoma State in their last outing. In that one, Tulsa’s lead scorer was Junior Etou, with 18 points.
On the season, Etou is averaging 18.1 PPG with 6.4 RPG, while Sterling Taplin is also in double-figures for the Hurricane on 12.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 4.2 APG. DaQuan Jeffries is third on the Tulsa roster with 11.4 PPG and 5.8 RPG.
East Carolina is 6-2 ATS in the last eight versus the AAC and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 versus a team with a winning straight-up record. The Pirates are also 2-7 ATS in their last nine Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, the Golden Hurricane are 23-7 ATS in their last 30 Thursday games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight home games. Tulsa is also 3-8 ATS in their last 11 versus the AAC and the over is 5-0 in their last five home games.
Aside from a stumble against Charlotte (69-50 loss), East Carolina has looked pretty strong lately. The Pirates have put up at least 69 points in three of their last four wins. As for Tulsa, they had a pretty good run going with 157 combined points in two games but put up just 59 versus OK State. I like the Pirates to come out strong here and cover.
