Coming up on Tuesday from Xfinity Center College Park, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Maryland Terrapins will meet up on the college basketball court.
The Nittany Lions enter this game at 11-4 overall. Penn State has won four of their last five games, most recently beating Coppin State. In that one, Penn State’s Tony Carr led the way on 21 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Carr is the leading scorer on the season for the Nittany Lions, with 18.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 4.5 APG. Also in the Penn State double-digit club are Lamar Stevens (14.1 PPG; 7.1 RPG), Mike Watkins (12.4 PPG; 8.4 RPG), Shep Garner (11.3 PPG) and Josh Reaves (11.1 PPG).
Over on the Maryland side, they’re sitting at 12-3 on the season. The Terrapins have won their last six games in a row, taking out UMBC in their last outing. In that UMBC game, Maryland guard Kevin Huerter posted 20 points.
Leading the way in scoring for Maryland this year is Anthony Cowan (15.5 PPG), and Huerter is second on 14.1 PPG. The only other Terrapins player in double-digits this year is Bruno Fernando, with 10.1 PPG and 6.1 RPG.
The Lions are 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games. Penn State is also 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up win and 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven versus the Big 10.
Meanwhile, the Terrapins are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games. Maryland is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four versus the Big 10.
Penn State has some very capable scorers on their roster, but the team is also prone to lapses in play—as evidenced by a loss to Rider on December 22. As for Maryland, they were completely limp in the first half of the UMBC game, scoring just 18 points. The Terrapins offense needs to wake up before they get into these tougher games on the schedule. I don’t think that will happen, so I’m going with the Nittany Lions here.
