Out at McKenzie Arena on Thursday, the Western Carolina Catamounts will be matching up with the Chattanooga Mocs on the college basketball court.
The Catamounts come into this one with a 5-8 mark this year. Western Carolina has won two of their last three games, beating UNC Asheville and the Citadel in that time. In that last game, Catamounts guard Desmond Johnson logged 19 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Tops in scoring on the year for Western Carolina is Deriece Parks, with 10.7 PPG. The only other Catamounts player in double-figures right now is Mike Amius (10.2 PPG), but Matt Halvorsen is close on 9.3 PPG.
Over on the Chattanooga side, they’re sitting at 6-8 on the season. The Mocs have lost their last two games, falling to Georgia State and Samford. In the Samford game, Chattanooga’s Rodney Chatman put up 15 points.
Leading the way in scoring for Chattanooga this season is Makonde London (13.1 PPG; 7.7 RPG), and Nat Dixon is second on 12.6 PPG. Chatman is also in double-figures for the Mocs (11.7 PPG), as is Joshua Phillips (10.0 PPG; six games).
The Catamounts are 6-2 ATS in their last eight Thursday games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games overall. Western Carolina is also 3-1-1 ATS in their last five versus Southern and 7-15-1 ATS in their last 23 road games.
Meanwhile, the Mocs are 8-20 ATS in their last 28 games overall and 2-6 ATS int heir last eight games following an ATS loss. Chattanooga is also 5-21 ATS in their last 26 games versus Southern and 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.
Western Carolina has been playing it pretty loose this year. When they lose, they lose big; when they win, they barely squeak by. The Catamounts’ last three wins have come by a combined seven points. As for Chattanooga, they seem to have better scorers on their roster but have only put up 104 points across their last two games. I’m not in love with the pick (Chattanooga has been pretty cold against the spread lately), but I have to go with the Mocs here.
