The Citadel Bulldogs lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 5-8 (0-1 Southern) on the season after being defeated by the Western Carolina Catamounts, 81-79, this past Saturday. The Citadel fought back from a double-digit deficit in the 2nd half to take a 74-70 lead with just 2:58 left in regulation, however, the Bulldogs couldn’t hold on late for the victory. The Citadel shot just 38.1% from the field and 29.5% (13-44) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Tariq Simmons who had 16 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. On the season, The Citadel is averaging 86.6 ppg on 42.0% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 11.8 three-pointers per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, The Citadel has been led by Preston Parks (13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.2 apg, 2.3 spg), Tariq Simmons (13.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.2 spg), Matt Frierson (11.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 spg), and Kaelon Harris (8.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.0 apg). The Furman Paladins improved to 10-4 (1-0 Southern) on the season after defeating the VMI Keydets, 87-57, this past Saturday. Furman had a slow start to the game, however, it didn’t last long as the Paladins easily pulled away from VMI after a monster 43-3 Furman run help give the Paladins a 60-24 lead with 14:19 left in the 2nd half. Furman shot 50.8% from the field and 51.6% (16-31) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Paladins was Daniel Fowler who had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Furman is averaging 80.3 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Paladins are averaging 10.6 three-pointers per game on 35.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Furman has been led by Devin Sibley (15.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.5 apg), John Davis III (12.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.6 spg), Daniel Fowler (11.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.5 spg), and Matt Rafferty (11.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.6 spg). Defensively, Furman is allowing their opponents to average 68.6 ppg on 43.3% shooting from the field. The Paladins have a rebound margin of 0.4 and a turnover margin of 3.8.
The Bulldogs are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. Southern opponents and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Paladins are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The Citadel is a team that likes to push the offensive tempo and although they do rank 19th in scoring offense and 4th in three-pointers made per game, the Bulldogs haven’t been able to stop anyone on the defensive end as they rank 349th in scoring defense and 322nd in defensive FG%. Furman is one of the best teams in the Southern Conference this season and have been solid on both ends as the Paladins rank 72nd in scoring offense, 140th in FG%, and 103rd in scoring defense. Furman couldn’t pick up upset wins over Duke, Butler, or Tennessee earlier this season, however, the Paladins are a solid team in which many big names schools would probably like to avoid and as they are at home in this one, I don’t see any reason why Furman can’t cover this large spread. Take Furman to cover.
