Southern Utah had no answers on the offensive end against the Montana defense and couldn’t fight back after trailing by a 39-20 margin at halftime. Southern Utah shot just 26.3% from the field and 26.7% (4-15) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Idaho State Bengals won their 2nd straight game and improved to 6-6 (1-0 Big Sky) on the season after defeating the Weber State Wildcats, 62-60, this past Saturday. Idaho State went into halftime with a 31-27 lead and pulled away late in the 2nd half after taking a 62-52 lead with 2:29 left in regulation. Idaho State shot 50.9% from the field and outrebounded the Wildcats by a 34-27 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Bengals was Jared Stutzman who had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. On the season, Idaho State is averaging 71.1 ppg on 45.5% shooting from the field. The Bengals are averaging 7.6 three-pointers per game on 36.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Idaho State has been led by Jared Stutzman (13.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.3 apg), Balint Mocsan (12.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.0 apg), Brandon Boyd (10.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.5 spg), and Geno Luzcando (10.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.8 spg). Defensively, Idaho State is allowing their opponents to average 71.0 ppg on 44.5% shooting from the field. The Bengals have a rebound margin of -0.3 and a turnover margin of -0.8.
The Thunderbirds are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 raod games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Bengals are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall however, are just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games.
It has been a struggle for Southern Utah as of late as the Thunderbirds have lost 4 of their last 5 games and have allowed their opponents to average 88.6 ppg during that span. Southern Utah will need to improve their defense if they want to have some success in the Big Sky this year as the Thunderbirds rank just 342nd in scoring defense and 341st in defensive FG%. Idaho State has won 6 of their last 7 games ad has been average on both ends of the court this season as they rank T-160th in scoring defense, 149th in FG%, and 138th in 3P-FG%. Southern Utah has a decent offense, however, I like how the Bengals offense has been playing as of late and as I think the Thunderbirds defense will give up plenty up points, I’m taking Idaho State to cover this mid-range home spread.
