Down at the Cajundome on Thursday evening, the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns will be matching up on the college basketball court.
Appalachian State enters this game with a 7-8 record overall. After a four-game losing streak, the Mountaineers have won their last two, most recently over UT-Arlington. In that UTA game, Mountaineers guard Ronshad Shabazz set the pace on 21 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Shabazz leads the Mountaineers in scoring with 20.9 PPG and 3.4 RPG, while Justin Forrest is second on 15.3 PPG. They’re the only two Appalachian State players averaging in double-figures, but Griffin Kinney is almost there at 9.9 PPG.
Over on the Cajuns’ side, they’re currently 12-3 on the season. UL-Lafayette dropped one at Clemson recently, but since has beaten Little Rock and Arkansas State. In that last game, Frank Bartley led the Cajuns on 23 points.
Bartley also leads UL-Lafayette in scoring this year with 15.9 PPG; he’s tied alongside JaKeenan Gant, who also has 15.9 PPG and 7.1 RPG. Bryce Washington is the top Cajuns rebounder on 10.3 RPG and 10.3 PPG.
The Mountaineers are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight versus the Sun Belt and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games following a straight-up win. Appalachian State is also 6-18-2 ATS in their last 26 road games and 0-6 ATS in their last six games following an ATS win.
Meanwhile, the Cajuns are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games and 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight versus the Sun Belt. UL-Lafayette is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven Thursday games and 5-14 ATS in their last 19 following an ATS win.
The Mountaineers dropped a couple of very winnable games in that losing streak, but to their credit they’ve picked it back up over the last two. App State is going to be hard-pressed to keep up with the Ragin’ Cajuns here, however, so I have to take Louisiana-Lafayette for the cover.
