We have some Big Ten college basketball action on Thursday night’s slate, as the Maryland Terrapins take on the #1 Michigan State Spartans.
The Maryland Terrapins will look to add to their current 7 game winning streak after taking down Penn State in their last outing by a final score of 75-69, opening 2018 on a high note. Anthony Cowan led the team with 18 points and 4 assists with a pair of steals, while Bruno Fernando added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Kevin Huerter added 13 points and Michal Cekovsky chipped in 10 points to finish off the scoring in double digits for the Terps in the win. Cowan leads the team in scoring with an average of 15.6 points and 4.5 assists per game, while Fernando is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.4 boards per game this season. As a team, Maryland is scoring 77.9 points per game on 48.9% shooting from the field, 39.1% from behind the arc and 74.2% from the foul line this season. The Terrapins also own a tight defense that’s allowing the 9th-lowest field goal percentage against at 37.7%, and the 5th-lowest 3-point percentage against at 28.1% this season.

The #1 Michigan State Spartans will look for a win to start their reign atop the college basketball rankings after making it 13 wins in a row with a 108-52 drubbing of Savannah State in their last outing, marking the 4th straight game that Michigan State hit the century mark on the scoreboard. Nick Ward shot a perfect 9 of 9 from the floor for 21 points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocks, while Miles Bridges added a monster double-double of his own with 19 points and 21 rebounds. Cassius Winston added a 3rd double-double for Sparty with 16 points, 13 assists and 3 steals, while Matt McQuaid added 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting with 4 threes in just 17 minutes. Joshua Langford added 11 points and Jaren Jackson Jr. chipped in 10 to round out the scoring in double figures for Michigan State in the rout. Bridges leads the Spartans with an average of 17 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while Cassius Winston is the team’s top assist man with 7.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Michigan State is scoring 87.7 points per game while boasting the 2nd-best field goal percentage in the country at 53.1% from the field, 41.2% from behind the arc and 71.5% from the foul line this season. Like Maryland, Michigan State has been very good defensively, holding their opposition to the lowest field goal percentage against in the country at 32.9% this season.
Maryland is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference matchups while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 road games. Michigan State is 20-6 ATS in their last 26 home games and 35-11 ATS in their last 36 conference matchups while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The underdog is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
This is a potential letdown spot for Michigan State after being named #1 in the rankings, and Maryland is prime for an upset. The Terrapins are a much tougher test than Savannah State and I’m not saying that the Spartans won’t be ready but I think Maryland can at least keep this within single digits so I’ll take Maryland and the points here.
