The Rice Owls lost their 5th consecutive game and dropped to 3-12 (0-2 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the UTEP Miners, 80-62, this past Saturday. Rice went into halftime with a 31-29 lead, however, struggled offensively in the 2nd half and couldn’t fight back after the Miners took a 70-54 lead with 3:47 left in regulation. Rice shot 36.1% from the field and 24.2% (8-33) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Owls was Connor Cashaw who had 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Rice is averaging 66.5 ppg on 39.3% shooting from the field. The Owls are averaging 7.7 three-pointers per game on 30.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Rice has been led by Connor Cashaw (16.3 ppg,, 6.9 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.3 spg), A.J. Lapray (10.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.3 spg), Ako Adams (8.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.3 apg), and Robert Martin (7.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg). Defensively, Rice is allowing their opponents to average 75.7 ppg on 44.3% shooting from the field. The Owls have a rebound margin of 1.0 and a turnover margin of -4.5.
The Monarchs are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games following a straight up win and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Owls are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games following a ATS loss and 10-26-1 ATS in their last 37 games vs. C-USA opponents.
Old Dominion is looking as if they might be one of the teams to beat in the C-USA this season as they have an outstanding defense that ranks 10th in scoring defense and 14th in defensive FG% to go along with an some solid offensive players in Ahmad Caver and B.J. Stith. Rice was really hurt in the offseason after losing their coach and the majority of their talent and although they still have a solid player in Connor Cashaw, the Owls have struggled on both sides of the court as they rank just 322nd in scoring offense and 356th in scoring defense. I’m not going to overthink this one as it basically comes down to the fact that Old Dominion plays great defense and Rice can’t score the basketball. I’m taking Old Dominion to cover this large road spread.
