The Marquette Golden Eagles had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 11-5 (2-2 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the 3rd ranked Villanova Wildcats, 100-90, this past Saturday. Marquette had no answers on the defensive end for the Wildcats and couldn’t fight back after Villanova took a 82-67 lead with just 4:28 left in regulation. Marquette allowed Villanova to shoot 56.1% from the field and 40.9% (9-22) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Markus Howard who had 37 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal. On the season, Marquette is averaging 83.9 ppg on 47.3% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 11.9 three-pointers per game on 40.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensviely, Marquette has been led by Markus Howard (23.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.8 apg), Andrew Rowsey (21.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.0 spg), Sam Hauser (14.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.2 spg), and Sacar Anim (6.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.1 apg). Defensively, Marquette is allowing their opponents to average 76.8 ppg on 47.3% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles have a rebound margin of -1.1 and a turnover margin of 2.3.
The Pirates are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. Big East opponents and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss however, just 19-39 ATS in their last 58 home games.
Seton Hall has won 10 of their 11 games and continues to pick up impressive victories over solid teams like Butler, Creighton, and Louisville. The Pirates have to be looked at as one of the favorites in the Big East this season as they have a very talented and experienced starting fives and currently rank 50th in scoring offense and 111th in scoring defense. Marquette has an explosive backcourt in Markus Howard and Andrew Rowsey and is led by their offense that ranks 30th in scoring offense and 2nd in three-pointers made per game. Markus Howard has been absolutely nuts as of late, scoring 89 points over his last two games and as I like the Golden Eagles offense at home, I’m taking Marquette to cover with the points in this one.
