Northern Iowa held a 48-45 lead late in the 2nd half, however, struggled offensively down the stretch and allowed the Ramblers to come away with the victory after the panthers scored just two points over the final 4:30 of regulation. Northern Iowa shot 36.5% from the field and 30.0% (6-20) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Panthers was Bennett Koch who had 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 blocks. The Indiana State Sycamores dropped to 7-9 (2-2 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Drake Bulldogs, 75-72, this past Saturday. Indiana State struggled offensively in the first half and although the Sycamores fought back, they couldn’t overcome the 39-29 lead Drake entered halftime with. Indiana State allowed Drake to shoot 53.1% from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Sycamores was Brenton Scott who had 25 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 steals. On the season, Indiana State is averaging 74.1 ppg on 43.2% shooting from the field. The Sycamores are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 37.9% shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, Indiana State has been led by Jordan Barnes (16.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.3 apg), Brenton Scott (14.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.1 spg), Qiydar Davis (10.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.5 spg), and Tyreke Key (8.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.1 spg). Defensively, Indiana State is allowing their opponents to average 73.5 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Sycamores have a rebound margin of 0.4 and a turnover margin of -0.1.
The Panthers are 20-7-3 ATS in their last 30 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record, however, are 0-9 ATS in their last 9 games vs. MVC opponents. The Sycamores are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. MVC opponents.
Northern Iowa has struggled as of late, however, they have fought hard against two very good MVC teams as of late in Missouri State and Loyola-Chicago and come into this matchup ranked 7th in scoring defense and 15th in defensive FG%. Indiana State has had an up and down season to date and although they rank just 197th in scoring offense and 212th in scoring defense, the Sycamores have shot the ball well from beyond the arc and have the 65th ranked turnover margin. Indiana State is tough to team gauge as their offense depends heavily on the three-pointer and as I like what I’ve seen defensively from this Northern Iowa team over their last two games, I think the Panthers do enough in this one to cover with the points. Take Northern Iowa and the points.
