We have some college basketball action out of the SoCon, as the Mercer Bears take on the Western Carolina Catamounts on Wednesday night.

The Mercer Bears will look to rebound after suffering back-to-back conference losses, including a narrow 74-71 setback against Furman in their last outing. Desmond Ringer led the team with 22 points on 7 of 8 shooting with a perfect 8 of 8 mark from the foul line and 7 rebounds. Marcus Cohen came 2nd with 14 points in just 19 minutes, while Demetre Rivers added 13 points with 7 rebounds and a pair of steals. Ria’n Holland added 11 points with 7 rebounds of his own to go along with a team-high 6 assists to round out the quartet of double digit scorers for Mercer in the loss. Holland leads the team in scoring with 20.2 points per game, while Stephon Jelks leads the team in rebounding with 7.1 rebounds per game and Jordan Strawberry is the team’s top assist man with 3.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Mercer is scoring 78.5 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field while boasting the 7th-best 3-point percentage in the country at 42.4% and owning a 74.2% percentage from the foul line this season.

Western Carolina vs. Mercer - 1/10/18 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Western Carolina Catamounts will look to rebound from their first conference loss of the year in an 85-71 loss to Samford in their last outing. Matt Halvorsen led the team with 21 points on 6 of 14 shooting from behind the arc, while Mike Amius added 13 points and Onno Steger added 10 points in just 13 minutes on 4 of 6 shooting with a pair of threes to finish off the trio of double digit scorers for Western Carolina in the losing effort with both also adding a pair of steals. Deriece Parks led the team with a share of the team-high with 7 rebounds and a team-leading 7 assists with a pair of steals and 9 points in the losing effort. Amius leads the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game, while Marc Gosselin leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game and Devin Peterson leads the way in assists with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Western Carolina is scoring 68.5 points per game on 39.5% shooting from the field, 34.5% from behind the arc and 65.7% from the foul line this season.

Mercer is 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 games following a loss and 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Western Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 9-3 in their last 12 games overall. The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.

Mercer has done well rebounding from a loss, but I’m a tad bit concerned about their record ATS on the road this season, where they’ve covered just once in 5 tries. Western Carolina is a lot better than their record would indicate, and I think given the success the underdog has had in this matchup, the points with the Catamounts is the play in this one.
