We have some Horizon League action on the hardwood, as the Cleveland State Vikings take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a college basketball matchup on Friday night.
The Cleveland State Vikings will look to bounce back after dropping 7 of their last 8 games following a heartbreaking 85-84 loss to Detroit Mercy last time out. Tyree Appleby and Bobby Word tied for the team-high with 19 points apiece, with Appleby going 6 of 11 from the floor with 3 threes and a team-high 7 assists and a pair of steals, while Word drilled 6 threes. Stefan Kenic added 15 points, while Jamarcus Hairston added 14 points and a team-high 6 rebounds to round out the quartet of double digit scorers for the Vikings in the loss. Kasheem Thomas also chipped in 8 points and 6 assists in the losing effort for the Vikings. Kenny Carpenter leads the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game, while Anthony Wright leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per game and the aforementioned Appleby is the team’s leading assist man with 3.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Cleveland State is scoring 69.2 points per game on 44.2% shooting from the field, 32.4% from behind the arc and 66.4% from the foul line this season.

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies will try to get back to .500 in conference play after climbing to 2-3 in Horizon League play with a 95-82 win over Youngstown State last time out. Kendrick Nunn led the team with 26 points on 9 of 14 shooting with 6 threes, while Jalen Hayes added 20 points and 10 rebounds with 4 assists for the double-double. Nick Daniels added 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 9 assists, while Martez Walker added 13 points and Brailen Neely chipped in 11 points with 7 dimes. Isaiah Brock also contributed 6 points and 3 rejections for Oakland in the win. Nunn leads the team in scoring with 25.7 points per game, while Brock leads the team on the glass with 7.3 rebounds per game and Neely leads the way in assists with 5.6 dimes per game this season. As a team, Oakland is scoring 81.3 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 37.1% from behind the arc and 77.9% from the foul line this season.
Cleveland State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference matchups while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Oakland is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 conference matchups while the over is 7-2 in their last 9 games overall. The underdog is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
Cleveland State may be the worst team in the conference and Oakland has the ability to shoot the lights out at any time. However, this seems like a lot of points to lay considering that the underdog has had the bulk of the success, and last year’s set resulted in the road team winning both meetings, in addition to an 11 point win for the Vikings and a 2 point win for Oakland. I think the Vikings will want to get up for this game, and Oakland may take their foot off a bit, so I’ll back Cleveland State to get a backdoor cover at the very least.
